August 2009 Fishing Report

Hello again from the 3 Creek Ranch Nature Center. Summer has finally arrived in the valley and the weather has become more consistent. We are still getting some late afternoon storms, but for the most part we are enjoying nice temperatures and sunny days. All three creeks are enjoying nice water levels and temperatures, ensuring a long productive fishing season.

Spring Creek has been productive, even though the large green drake hatch is finished. We are seeing average numbers of PMDs, and we are having spinner falls in the mornings. Fish are beginning to rise to larger flies, while the pickiest fish prefer small spinner patterns. Cody Creek is still warming up, but is fishing much better than it was a few weeks ago. The exciting news here is that the hoppers have started showing up, and they are about 3 weeks early! This will hopefully make for a great hopper season. Our current approach is to throw something big out there and try to entice a rise. We have had some success at this, and we think it will only get better from here on out. Blue Crane Creek has also been fishing well over the last few weeks. The fish here are still moving in and chasing each other around to establish feeding dominance. As these fish settle into their summer feeding mode, they will become more and more of a challenge. We are still seeing PMD hatches in the early afternoon here, and we are starting to throw some hoppers and beetles.

Overall, the creeks are fishing well. Every spot is offering something different, which makes this time of year so much fun on the water.
