2009 Fishing Season Closes

The 2009 fishing season ended November 1st and once again we had a good year.  Not only did we have good fishing this past season, but we also had several new homeowners start fishing and overall use of the fishing program was up over 10 percent.  This past winter we were blessed with above normal snowpack.  The snowpack and good summer rains meant our streams had plenty of water all season long.  Let’s take a brief look back at the fishing this past year.

June is traditionally one of the best months to fish.  This past June it rained a lot and this did have some effect on the early season fishing.  There were a few days when Cody and Spring Creek were too high and dirty to fish but generally both creeks remained fishable and from the middle of June on, the fishing was very good.  The Green Drakes started hatching around the 18th and it didn’t take long for the fish to get on them in a big way.  I thought the hatch was particularly heavy this year and the fishing the past two weeks of June was as good as it gets.   July is also one of the best months to fish here at 3C.  Not only did the Green Drakes continue through early July, but the PMDs and Caddis both showed up early in the month.  Generally, I thought this July was slightly better than years past.  I did think the fishing in August was not quite as good as normal.  Although there were lots of grasshoppers around it never seemed like the fish got on them consistently.  The tiny little sulphurs that normally hatch in August showed up but not in huge numbers.  The fish did key in on them but this can be a difficult hatch to match and this year was no exception.  I thought fishing picked up in September.  Water levels were good and we had good fishing on ants and beetles and later in the month midges and red quills.  The fishing this October was all over the map; we had a few days when the fall baetis would hatch in huge numbers and the dry fly fishing was off the charts.  The creek levels began to drop in mid-October and by the 20th the fish were on their way downstream to the Snake for the winter.

Overall, I was pleased with the fishing this year and very happy to have met some new friends and fishing with many old friends as well.  I will continue to do my best to provide you and your guests with a memorable fishing experience.  I am already looking forward to getting back on the water next year.  Have a great winter and I’ll see you in 2010!
